Skin Tightening Treatments, at a glance

Gangnam Celliting Clinic · 121 Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul · Gangnam Station Exit 12 (4-min walk)

Skin tightening improves how firm and smooth the skin itself feels, while lifting raises tissue that has moved downward. Tightening usually relies on radiofrequency, such as Thermage FLX or XERF, which warms the dermis to contract collagen and prompt renewal. At Gangnam Celliting Clinic, the doctor checks crepey or loose skin on the face, eyes and neck first; body areas can be discussed at consultation.

  • Main energy Radiofrequency (RF)
  • Typical concerns Crepey, loose or thinning skin
  • Areas Face, eyes, neck; body by consultation
  • Feel Brief deep heat with cooling
Key difference

Tightening vs lifting: what is the difference?

Tightening works on skin quality, and lifting works on position. Many people need some of both, but knowing which matters most for you changes the plan.

Skin tightening Skin lifting
Main problem Crepey, lax, thin skin Tissue that has dropped
Typical sign Fine crinkling, loose texture Jowls, heavy cheeks, low brow
Common energy Radiofrequency Focused ultrasound
Working layer Dermis, broad volume Deeper support layers, set points
Example devices Thermage FLX, XERF Ultherapy PRIME, Sofwave

If dropped tissue is your main concern, our facial sagging page explains lifting in more depth.

How RF tightens

How radiofrequency tightens crepey and loose skin

Radiofrequency tightens skin by heating the dermis and the fibrous tissue beneath it to a controlled temperature. The heat makes existing collagen fibres contract and may prompt the skin to build new collagen over the following months.

Thermage FLX

Monopolar RF with cooling and vibration, with tips designed for the face, the eye area and the body. More on our Thermage FLX page.

XERF

Radiofrequency using more than one frequency, so the doctor can vary heating depth for different areas of skin.

Why heat is controlled

Too little heat does little, and too much can irritate skin. Settings are adjusted to your skin and comfort during the session.

Areas

Face and body areas that respond to tightening

Tightening can be used wherever skin has become loose or crepey but is not heavily hanging. Common areas include:

  • Upper and lower eyelids, where skin is thinnest and crinkles first
  • Cheeks and lower face with crepey texture
  • Neck and under the chin
  • Abdomen after pregnancy or weight change
  • Upper arms, inner thighs and above the knees
Body skin is thicker and covers larger areas, so body sessions may take longer and need different settings. Whether a body area suits treatment is confirmed at consultation.

Sensation and aftercare

What tightening feels like and how to care for skin afterwards

Most people describe radiofrequency as short bursts of deep heat, followed by cooling. The sensation is comfort-managed with topical anaesthesia or other options the doctor matches to the area.

  1. First hours Mild redness and warmth are common and usually fade within hours.
  2. First few days Use gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise if the doctor advises.
  3. Sun protection Apply sunscreen daily to treated face and neck areas to protect new collagen.
  4. Over the months Firmness may continue to improve gradually as collagen remodels; review progress with follow-up photos.

FAQ

Skin Tightening Treatments: your questions, answered

Reviewed by Dr. Ho-chan Kim, MD, PhD · Updated October 2026

Can skin tightening help crepey eyelids?

Often, yes, for mild to moderate crepiness. Radiofrequency devices such as Thermage FLX have eye-specific tips used with protective measures. Heavy hooded skin over the eye, however, may need a surgical opinion, which the doctor can explain.

Does skin tightening work on loose stomach skin?

It may improve mild to moderate looseness and texture on the abdomen. It cannot remove large amounts of excess skin or tighten separated abdominal muscles. The doctor will assess how much change is realistic before you commit.

How many tightening sessions will I need?

Many people start with one session and review progress over the next few months as collagen responds. Some areas or skin types may benefit from a second session or periodic maintenance. The doctor suggests a plan after seeing your skin.

Is radiofrequency tightening safe for darker skin tones?

Radiofrequency is generally considered suitable for many skin tones because it heats deeper layers rather than targeting pigment. Every skin still reacts individually, so tell the doctor about any history of pigment changes after treatments.

Can I exercise after skin tightening?

Light activity is usually fine the same day. The doctor may suggest avoiding intense exercise, saunas and very hot baths for a short period while redness or warmth settles. Follow the written aftercare you receive for your area.
