Photos looking straight ahead and slightly down help the doctor judge your jowl type before you travel.
A jowl is not just loose skin. Learn what forms it, how doctors tell a fat jowl from a skin jowl, what one session feels like and how the change typically unfolds over the following weeks.

Non-surgical jowl treatment uses focused ultrasound and radiofrequency to tighten the tissue that lets a jowl bulge over the jawline. It works best on mild to moderate jowls where skin still has some elasticity. At Gangnam Celliting Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, the doctor first checks whether your jowl is mainly skin, fat or both, because that decides which device is likely to help.
A jowl is a small bulge of soft tissue that sits just above the jawline, beside the chin, where the smooth line of the jaw used to be. It forms because tissue in front of and behind it stays anchored while the tissue in between slides down.
This is why a jowl can appear even in people who are slim, and why tightening only the surface often gives a smaller result than expected.

Most jowls are a mix, but one part usually dominates, and the doctor checks this before suggesting a device. The assessment is done with you sitting upright, looking forward and then down, because jowls change with head position.
| Mainly skin jowl | Mainly fat jowl | |
|---|---|---|
| How it looks | Thin fold, crepey surface | Soft, rounded fullness |
| When pinched | Little tissue between fingers | Thicker, cushioned feel |
| Typical device focus | Radiofrequency for the dermis | Deep focused ultrasound |
| Things to watch | Fine lines nearby | Avoid over-thinning the face |
A jowl session is a seated or reclined treatment in which the doctor works line by line along the jaw; its length depends on the devices and areas planned. No cuts or needles are needed for the devices themselves.
Jowls are often treated within a wider plan for the jaw and chin; our lower face lifting page explains that approach.

Results develop slowly because the body builds new collagen over months, so the clearest change usually appears weeks after the session, not on the day. The timeline below is general and varies between people.
| Time after session | What many people notice |
|---|---|
| Day 0–3 | Mild redness, swelling or tenderness along the jaw |
| Week 1–2 | Swelling settles; skin may feel slightly firmer |
| Week 4–8 | Jawline may start to look cleaner from the side |
| Month 2–3 | Tightening often becomes easier to see in photos |
| Month 3–6 | Collagen remodelling may continue for some patients |
Comparing front and side photos taken on the day of treatment with ones taken at three months is the most honest way to judge the change. For a side-by-side look at other options, see best treatments for jowls.

Because the main change appears after a few weeks, jowl treatment suits a short trip: most people return to sightseeing the same or next day, and the result keeps developing at home. We suggest keeping a day free in case of swelling and avoiding saunas and very hot baths for a few days. The clinic opens Monday to Saturday and is close to Gangnam Station Exit 12. Bring photos of your face from a few years ago if you have them.

Ageing continues, so jowls can gradually return over time. Non-surgical treatment does not stop the process, but it can improve how the jawline looks for a period that varies between people. Some patients choose a maintenance session later to keep the jawline firmer.
It can for some people. When facial fat reduces, skin that has lost elasticity may hang more loosely over the jaw. If you plan major weight loss, tell the doctor, as it may be better to treat once your weight is stable.
Most people feel short bursts of heat or a deep prickling along the jaw, which is usually strongest over bone. Comfort options such as topical anesthesia or AirNox analgesia are offered, and energy can be adjusted during the session if needed.
Neither is better for everyone. Focused ultrasound reaches deeper support tissue, while radiofrequency mainly heats the skin itself. Many jowls involve both layers, so the doctor may combine them after checking your skin and fat.
Usually yes. These treatments are non-invasive and most people can travel the next day. Mild swelling or tenderness may still be present, so stay hydrated on the flight and follow your written aftercare.
