Skin Lifting Devices Compared, at a glance

Gangnam Celliting Clinic · 121 Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul · Gangnam Station Exit 12 (4-min walk)

The main difference between lifting devices is the energy they use and the depth they reach. Ultherapy PRIME uses focused ultrasound for deeper lift, Thermage FLX and XERF use radiofrequency for broad tightening, and Sofwave targets the mid-dermis for firmness and fine lines. At our Gangnam clinic, the doctor matches the device to your sagging pattern, skin thickness and comfort.

Ultherapy PRIME vs Thermage FLX vs Sofwave and more

Each device suits a different layer and concern. The table simplifies general information about each platform; your own settings, sensation and recovery may differ.

Device Energy and depth Best for Feel Typical downtime
Ultherapy PRIME Focused ultrasound, about 1.5–4.5 mm Jowls, jawline, brow, neck Deep warm pinpricks Minimal; tenderness possible
Thermage FLX Monopolar RF, dermis and below Crepey skin, eyes, overall tightening Brief heat with cooling Minimal; mild redness
Sofwave Ultrasound beams, about 1.5 mm Fine lines, skin firmness Warmth with built-in cooling Minimal; mild redness
XERF Multi-frequency RF, adjustable depth Tightening and contour Gentle to moderate heat Minimal; mild redness
Olla Wave / Fortra Explained at consultation Add-ons in combined lifting Varies by setting Minimal, per clinic
‘Minimal downtime’ still means some people have redness, swelling or tenderness for a few hours to several days.
Choosing

How to choose between lifting devices

The best way to choose is to start from your main concern, not from the device name. These four questions narrow the field quickly.

  1. Where is the looseness? Heavy jowls and a softer jaw usually point to deeper focused ultrasound. Crepey texture across the cheeks or eyes often suits radiofrequency.
  2. How thick is your skin? Thin skin may need gentler depths, while thicker, heavier skin may benefit from deeper energy.
  3. How do you handle heat? If you are sensitive, the doctor may favour devices with built-in cooling or plan stronger comfort options.
  4. How much time do you have? Combining devices in one visit suits short trips; spacing them out suits people who live nearby.

Myths

Common myths about lifting devices

Several popular beliefs about lifting devices are only partly true. Here are the ones our doctors hear most often from overseas patients.

‘More shots means more lift’

Not necessarily. Placing energy at the right depth matters more than the total count, and excessive energy can raise the risk of side effects.

‘Results are instant’

Some tightening is felt early, but most collagen-related change develops over two to three months.

‘Devices melt facial fat’

Lifting devices are designed to tighten tissue. Settings are chosen to avoid unwanted volume loss, and slimming is not their main purpose.

‘One device replaces surgery’

Devices suit mild to moderate sagging. They give a subtler change than a surgical facelift.

Often a good fit

  • You have read about several devices and feel unsure
  • You have tried one device and want to know what else exists
  • You want to understand how each one may feel
  • You prefer a plan built on your skin, not on trends

Talk to your doctor first

  • You have strong sensitivity to heat
  • Fillers or threads were placed in the last few months
  • You have metal implants or an electronic implant
  • You expect surgical-level change from a device

Suitability is a medical decision made by your doctor after an in-person consultation and review of your health history.

FAQ

Skin Lifting Devices Compared: your questions, answered

Reviewed by Dr. Ho-chan Kim, MD, PhD · Updated October 2026

Is Ultherapy PRIME or Thermage FLX better for jowls?

For jowls caused mainly by deeper tissue descent, focused ultrasound such as Ultherapy PRIME is often considered first because it reaches support layers. Thermage FLX may be added for skin tightening. The doctor decides after checking your tissue thickness and laxity.

What is the difference between Sofwave and Ultherapy?

Both use ultrasound, but Sofwave works mainly in the mid-dermis with parallel beams and built-in cooling, while Ultherapy focuses energy at several depths, including deeper support layers, guided by real-time ultrasound imaging. Sofwave is often chosen for fine lines and firmness, Ultherapy for deeper lift.

Which lifting device has the least discomfort?

It varies by person and setting. Devices with built-in cooling are often described as more tolerable, but sensitivity differs. The clinic manages comfort with options such as topical anaesthesia or AirNox nitrous-oxygen analgesia, matched to the device.

Can I switch to a different device next time?

Yes. Many people change devices as their skin changes or to target a different concern. Bring notes or photos from previous sessions so the doctor can choose settings that complement what you had before.

Is radiofrequency or ultrasound safer for thin skin?

Both can be used on thin skin when settings are adjusted carefully. The doctor may choose shallower depths or lower energy and avoid overlapping heat in thin areas. Safety depends more on correct settings than on the energy type.
