What turns a beauty treatment into a medical one? This page explains the difference in Korea, from diagnosis and approved devices to sedation and records, and how Gangnam Celliting Clinic manages risk and comfort for visiting patients.

A medical anti-aging treatment is one that a licensed doctor diagnoses, plans and performs, using regulated devices and materials, with informed consent, pain control and medical records. In Korea, injections, medical-grade lifting devices and sedation belong in a medical clinic, while spas and aesthetic shops focus on cosmetic care such as facials, massage and routine skin care.
A treatment is medical when a doctor is responsible for it from start to finish. Five features usually mark the difference:
You can see how cleared devices differ from one another in our lifting devices comparison.

Spas, aesthetic shops and medical clinics are licensed for different things, even though all three can play a role in caring for your skin.
| Spa or aesthetic shop | Medical clinic | |
|---|---|---|
| Who treats you | Aestheticians or therapists | Licensed doctors |
| Typical services | Facials, massage, skin care | Injectables, lifting devices, regenerative care |
| Health assessment | Usually a short questionnaire | Medical history and examination |
| Pain control | Cooling or none needed | Topical, local, analgesia or sedation |
| If a reaction occurs | Referral to a doctor | Assessed and treated on site |
| Records | Service notes | Medical records with treatment details |
Many people use both: a spa for relaxation and maintenance, and a clinic for treatments that change tissue.
Risk is managed before, during and after treatment, not only when something goes wrong. For suitable patients most medical anti-aging procedures are low-risk, but redness, swelling, bruising or temporary tenderness can occur, and rarer complications are possible.
By the clinic's own record, no serious complication has been reported since it opened in Gangnam in 2007. A record is not a guarantee, which is why screening and follow-up still matter. Read more about who performs your treatment.

Comfort is managed medically, and the option is matched to the procedure, the area treated and your own preference.
A numbing cream or a small local injection reduces sensation in the treated area.
You breathe a nitrous-oxygen mix that eases discomfort and anxiety while you stay awake.
A needle-free assisted injection device that can make some injections more comfortable.
For longer or more intensive sessions, sedation can be given and monitored by the medical team.
Suitability is a medical decision made by your doctor after an in-person consultation and review of your health history.
Before your visit, share your medical history, medications, allergies and previous procedures.
The doctor examines your skin and explains the findings in plain language.
You review the treatment, possible side effects, alternatives and the chosen pain-control method, then sign consent.
The doctor performs the procedure with the agreed comfort option and monitors you throughout.
Treatment details are recorded, and a free 3-month follow-up continues after you return home.
No serious complication since 2007. FDA/KFDA-cleared devices and verifiable, genuine consumables.

Being treated in another country makes paperwork more important. Ask for your treatment details, products and aftercare in writing so a doctor at home can understand what was done. Celliting provides written aftercare in English, Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese and a 24-hour contact line. If you choose sedation, rest afterwards and do not drive. As one of 21 Gangnam-gu Official Partner Clinics for International Patients, the clinic in Gangnam, Seoul regularly cares for overseas visitors.

Ask three questions: who performs it, which device or product is used, and whether a medical record is kept. If a doctor diagnoses you, uses regulated devices or injectables and documents the treatment, it is medical care. If any of these is missing, ask why before you agree.
They can carry more risk because they change tissue, which is exactly why they belong in a medical setting. Side effects such as redness, swelling or bruising are usually temporary for suitable patients, and a doctor can recognise and manage rarer problems quickly.
Contact the clinic through the 24-hour line or WhatsApp and describe or photograph the reaction. The free 3-month follow-up covers questions after you return, and your written aftercare and treatment details help a local doctor assess you if an in-person check is needed.
Usually not. Many treatments are comfortable with topical or local anesthesia or nitrous-oxygen analgesia. Monitored sleep sedation is an option for some longer or more intensive procedures, and the doctor will discuss whether it is appropriate for your treatment and health history.
A record shows exactly which device, settings and products were used. That helps the next doctor plan safely, avoid overtreatment and understand any delayed reaction. It is especially useful for international patients who may continue their care in another country.
Share your medical history and goals on WhatsApp (+82-10-4567-3237) or through the consultation form, and a doctor will review which options are suitable for you.
